Soap is a cleaning substance made by combining fat or oil with an alkali (like caustic soda or caustic potash). This process is called saponification. The result is a molecule that has two different ends:

  • A head that loves water (hydrophilic).
  • A tail that loves oil and grease but hates water (hydrophobic).

How Does Soap Work?

  1. Dirt and grease don’t dissolve in water alone because they are oily.
  2. When soap is added, the tails of soap molecules stick into the grease/oil, while the heads stay in water.
  3. Many soap molecules surround the grease, forming a micelle (a tiny ball-like structure).
  4. The grease gets trapped inside the micelle, and because the outside is water-loving, the whole thing can be rinsed away with water.
